North East Exhibition

May2

The exhibition which is on the 24th May 2012, is going to be based at The Holy Biscuit in Newcastle, and the whole point of the exhibition is to show art pieces that everyone in the Youth forum have made to highlight perceptions of Youth.

This includes photos which we took during our OCN course in Journalism skills with Headliners, the art work pieces that we did in the Graffiti workshop with Frank Styles, and also a DVD which the lovely Faye Willis (Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project Youth Worker) has helped us create pulling together footage from start to the end of Our Say, Our Way and footage from our recent residential to London where we did some joint graffiti work with SE1 United at London’s Southbank.

The original inspiration came from Rosie, Nicole and Becca from Deckham. They produced a piece of art representing the ‘hoody nation’ and negative media stereotypes of young people. They included a mirror where the hoody’’s face should be which encourages people looking at it to ask ‘what do you see?’ What their perception is of young people who wear hoody’s. This came from a collection of different ideas which the girls had thought about over a few sessions

Before we made the final art work piece the youth forum took part in a graffiti workshop to look at different graffiti techniques to make the art piece look amazing! We’ve also done some smaller pieces which are going to be shown on the day.

We are going to The Holy Biscuit as a whole group next week to see the venue and have a better understanding of how we can exhibit our art pieces to get the biggest impact!

North East meets South East London

We’re part of the North East Our Say, Our Way project and recently we travelled to London to meet up with London Our Say, Our Way-ers to get some info on the differences in where we live, and impressions of young people.

We completed a graffiti wall at the Skate Park at London’s Southbank, working alongside SE1 (one of Our Say, Our Way’s London based youth forums). This was to highlight the public’s perception of young that have been created by the media relating to the 2011 Riots, which started in London and quickly spread across England, but also to challenge them. We interviewed members of the SE1 United group and general public about the riots and got their thoughts about young people. We also gained footage from the North East public to compare to London, to understand questions like: Why did the riots start? What would have happened if the riots were in the North East? And Could the Government have done anything to further prevent the riots? Click here to read the rest of this entry

E1 Action Group Residential in Manchester!

Apr30

The Whitechapel Youth Action Group attended the national steering group residential a few weeks ago, at The Chill Factore Manchester, to help finalise the youth engagement toolkit OSOW is creating! But it wasn’t all work and no play… There was also activities on the slopes & climbing!

The OSOW toolkit will help other social landlords to implement Youth Engagement Projects all over the country!

Just after the residential the Whitechapel group were sent a sneak-peak preview of the toolkit & they were very pleased to see their ideas had been listened to & used.

It is safe to say…. they approved!!
