Hi,
We’re Georgia and Becky, both 21. We’re part of the Peer Educators team at Sans Street Youth & Community Centre.
Before we worked here we were both volunteer Youth Workers at our local youth projects, Pallion Action Group and YMCA, who introduced us to the job vacancy and helped with our CV and interveiw tecnuiques.
Our roles
We started our role here at Sans Street in September 2011 so far we have gained a lot more experience and a load of qualifications, such as;
Sports Leaders, Family Nurturing, Brief Alcohol intervention (NECA), Smoking Cessation Advisor Training (NECA), Money management, Emotional Resilience (MIND), Health Improvment. We’re also undergoing our Level 2 Qualification in Youth & Play Work.
We have been on residentials, worked at youth club drop ins, up our local schools on a dinner time and joint events. We are planning our next joint event which is olympic themed and we are looking forward to it.
Next steps
Our role ends in August this year. We hope to find a permanant job in Youth Work when we leave so we can pass on our experience and knowledge that we have gained here at Sans Street. We also want to gain more experience and get more qualifications to help us progress as Youth Workers.

North East meets South East London
We’re part of the North East Our Say, Our Way project and recently we travelled to London to meet up with London Our Say, Our Way-ers to get some info on the differences in where we live, and impressions of young people.
We completed a graffiti wall at the Skate Park at London’s Southbank, working alongside SE1 (one of Our Say, Our Way’s London based youth forums). This was to highlight the public’s perception of young that have been created by the media relating to the 2011 Riots, which started in London and quickly spread across England, but also to challenge them. We interviewed members of the SE1 United group and general public about the riots and got their thoughts about young people. We also gained footage from the North East public to compare to London, to understand questions like: Why did the riots start? What would have happened if the riots were in the North East? And Could the Government have done anything to further prevent the riots? Click here to read the rest of this entry

The Whitechapel Youth Action Group attended the national steering group residential a few weeks ago, at The Chill Factore Manchester, to help finalise the youth engagement toolkit OSOW is creating! But it wasn’t all work and no play… There was also activities on the slopes & climbing!

The OSOW toolkit will help other social landlords to implement Youth Engagement Projects all over the country!

Just after the residential the Whitechapel group were sent a sneak-peak preview of the toolkit & they were very pleased to see their ideas had been listened to & used.
It is safe to say…. they approved!!
